tumblr. and Honduras don’t mix well
sorry but i’ve had too many difficulties with this here. i’m sticking to facebook for a while. i’m sure all 5 of my followers will be super-disappointed.
this is a little shot of my view on the plane. i thought it was pretty awesome. maybe cause i don’t get to fly that often haha
I’m in Honduras
What up everyone?! I’m in Honduras. Yesterday was a very long travel day to get from Searcy to Catacamas. Started at 2:45 A.M. to catch my 5:50 A.M. flight out of Little Rock. Met up with Mary Hendricks there and we flew to Atlanta. There, we met up with a great group from Johnsons Ferry. They are a church group from Marrietta, GA. Not sure if that’s spelled right. They are taking a short trip down here and leaving Sunday. It was really nice getting to travel with them. A bigger group is always more fun when traveling haha…Once we flew into Tegucigalpa, we were picked up by a Predisan van and the ride to Catacamas took about 4 and a half hours. Pretty bumpy ride but it was in an awesome Land Cruiser. Also, the drive was gorgeous. Mountains and more mountains. When we got into town, we were taken to our host family’s house. It consists of Martha Mendez, who is one of the nicest ladies that I have ever met. Even in another language, she is super sweet. She is older, has 8 children. But only one is still living with her. Her youngest daughter is Tunia. She was really nice as well, and with her English skills, she really helped us practice our Spanish, only filling in the gaps with her English. Dinner was about as awesome as rice, beans, cheese, and pork can get. And some great tea that smelled like cinnamon and tasted great. I’m really just a southern, sweet tea with ice kinda guy, but this was awesome. Also, it is supposed to help with digestion according to Tunia so I definitely gulped it down haha…Their house is very nice. Very clean. We definitely have a great setup being able to stay with a family and have a pleasant experience. I’m gonna have to learn how to fall asleep without having the AC cranked down for sure, but I’m sure I’ll be tired enough to get pretty good at it. Took a great cold shower this morning, appreciating the fact that she has plumbing that brings the water to a shower head.
When we got to Predisan this morning, we found out that we were getting to go out to do a Health Fair. Which is when a group from Predisan goes out to see people who can’t make it to the clinica and provide basic medical and dental services for a less than the price of a clinic visit. So we helped set up for that and when the patients showed up, we took blood pressure and temperature readings as part of the initial exam before they saw the doctor. On the video that I’m about to try to put up, I said that we only had an auxillary nurse but I was mistaken about that. We did have a doctor there along with an auxillary nurse.
After lunch, we got to sit in on a great ceremony for the presentation of scholarships that are provided through Predisan to children in the community. They provide funding that can be used for any sort of costs that are involved in sending the children to school. This could include anything from transportation, book fees, supplies, or uniforms. As you can see in the video, tons of kids! And it’s all focused around keeping the children out of trouble and dedicated to their studies and spiritual growth through weekly meetings with the families that are required. Great opportunities for families that otherwise would have to make really tough choices.
Ok. I’m new at this.
Sooo…I have never done anything like a blog before. I’ve done one entry and I don’t know if it was boring or what. Any advice or questions would be awesome…if anyone will actually read it. Soon to come: video of the house I’m staying in and the clinic that I’ll be working at.
One of the songs I’m digging right now.
